2010 Calendar of Gardening Events and Meeting Schedules
The events listed here are gardening events open to the public. They are not necessarily part of the Oklahoma Horticultural Society (OHS). Many of these gardening events take place at the Will Rogers Garden Exhibition Center at the Will Rogers Park in Oklahoma City. The center is located at 3400 NW 36th Street in Oklahoma City, just west of I-44 at the NW 36th Street exit. August 7, 2010: Beautification Station, Cruisin' OKC. Join us for a bus tour of beautification projects located aross Oklahoma City. August 18, 2010: Tallamy Lecture 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. at the OKC Zoo. Douglas Tallamy, author of the award-winning book, Bringing Nature Home; How You Can Sustain Wildlife with Native Plants will be speaking at the OKC Zoo Education Auditorium on the 18th. Doug is a professor of Entomology at the University of Delaware and an avid proponent of native plants.

Oklahoma Certified Wildscape: Create Your Own by Mary Elliott. 7 PM at OSU-OKC Agriculture Research Center, 400 N. Portland, Oklahoma City. Free Drawing Classes (ongoing) 9:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to register for Will Rogers Garden Exhibition Center’s “Flowers and Fun” Drawing Class held on the second and fourth Thursday of every month. The class is free, but participants are asked to bring an 18 x 24 inch drawing pad, an ebony pencil, a kneaded eraser and a gum eraser. No drawing experience is necessary. Set ups will contain various horticultural items. Call 943-0827 to register.

September 13, 2009: Oklahoma Horticultural Society's Fall Meeting, Stillwater, Ok. at the Studio Gardens. Board meeting at 12:30 PM, Business meeting at 1:30 PM. 2:00 PM speaker Marilyn Stewart will present, "Plant Connections: What You Grow Matters to the Environment". Marilyn and Husband Ken, have operated Wild Things Nursery in Seminole, Oklahoma since 2002. And they travel with their native plants (and the caterpillars & butterflies they rear) to plant sales and meetings all over the state. Silent Auction also so bring a donation to auction off! Afterwards those wishing to tour Dr. Whitcomb's nursery with him will travel a short distance to his grounds.
September 22, 2009: Oklahoma Horticultural Society's monthly meeting will be held at OSU at OKC Horticulture Resource Center, Room 126, 400 N. Portand at 7 PM. We will tour the new facility and grounds with Barry Fox.
October 3, 2009: Oklahoma Horticultural Society's GARDEN TOUR FOR CONNOISSEURS!
9 AM to 4 PM. Rain Date, Sunday October 4, Noon to 4 PM.
Tour seven outstanding private gardens plus this year we'll have garden artists, plants and garden related goodies for sale. Some outstanding vendors! Tickets will be available at our usual outlets. More Details click poster!

November 13, 2009: Fall Foliage Tour! 9:30 a.m. -11:30 p.m. Take an invigorating autumn hike through the Will Rogers Gardens. Brilliant crimson, gold and orange leaves are sure to line the paths through the Gardens' specialty areas. Please call 943-0827 to register.

December 6, 2009: 4 PM OHS Christmas Party at the home of Linda Horn. Details to follow but schedule it now, great time and great food will be had by all. Wear your baggy pants!
January 15-17, 2010: The Oklahoma City Home & Garden Show
With more than 400 local and national exhibitors expected, the Oklahoma City Home & Garden Show will be blooming with new, money-saving ideas that visitors can utilize in their own homes and gardens. From HGTV's “Design on a Dime,” Summer Baltzer will educate show attendees with tips and tricks for the design- and budget-conscious do-it-yourselfers.
The Oklahoma City Home & Garden Show will be held at the State Fair Park in Oklahoma City. Show hours are Friday 12 to 9 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults and free for children 12 and under. February 13-14, 2010: OHS Annual Lecture Series with TOVAH MARTIN
One of this country's best-known garden writers and lecturers, Tovah Martin is the author of The New Terrarium, Tasha Tudor's Garden, Tasha Tudor's Heirloom Crafts, View from a Sketchbook, Garden Whimsy, Heirloom Flowers and several other books on gardening. Her articles are often featured in Country Gardens, Garden Design, La Vie Claire, Nature's Garden, Country Living, Cottages & Gardens, and Horticulture as well as many other publications. She has been a guest on several television programs, and has served as editorial producer of the PBS television series Cultivating Life. In 2008, Tovah was the recipient of The Garden Club of America's Sarah Chapman Francis Medal for outstanding literary achievement. (photographer Susan Johann)

February 23, 2010: Oklahoma Horticultural Society monthly program: Early Season Vegetables for Your Garden by Ray Ridlen. 7 PM at OSU-OKC Agriculture Research Center, 400 N. Portland, Oklahoma City. Educator of Horticulture for the Oklahoma County OSU Cooperative Extension Service, Ray Ridlen's long-time expertise in areas of gardening, landscaping, pest control, plant selection and plant maintenance has made him one of the best-known public figures of horticulture in our area. In addition, Ray is the advisor for the Oklahoma County Master Gardener program.
March 5, 2010: 6:30 PM. Paul Black of Mid-America Gardens in Oregon will be giving a program on iris for the Oklahoma iris Society at Will Rogers Garden Exhibition Center. All are welcome. 3400 NW 36 th St., OKC.
March 6, 2010: 9 AM to 3 PM, Pollen Dawber Seminar by Paul Black for OIS. Everything you'd want to know about iris hybridizing! Same location. $20 fee.

June 12, 2010: The 19th annual Festival in the Park at the Will Rogers Park Garden Center from 9 to 3 pm. It is a fun-filled day with many sellers of plants and various garden-related items, garden speakers, and a lunch room serving delicious sandwich plates. Will Rogers Park is at 3400 NW 36th St. (just west of I-44). Come join in the fun. Vendors are also welcome to purchase remaining booth spaces for $30 and $55. June 22, 2010: at 7:00 PM, the Oklahoma Horticultural Society Monthly Educational Meeting will take place at a different location. We will meet at the Will Rogers Horticultural Gardens and Arboretum located at 3400 NW 36th St. (just west of I-44). Louis Scott, Naturalist will meet us at the Will Rogers Garden Exhibition Center for a presentation and tour of the park's gardens and plant collections. Bring your water bottle and some comfortable walking shoes. The tour should last about 40 minutes.
