Winter Meeting

February 16, 2002

  1. Meeting called to order
  2. President Joe Howell called the meeting to order at 1:10 p.m. at the OKC Zoo Educational Building in Oklahoma City.

  3. Announcement for sign-up sheets
  4. A call for volunteers was given for various events and positions and sign-up sheets were placed at the entrance of the auditorium. OHS members were encouraged to sign up for future events, standing committees and to serve as future board members and officers.

  5. Approval of minutes
  6. The minutes for the September 23, 2002 Fall General Meeting were approved as written. Passed unanimously.

  7. Treasurer’s report
  8. Cathy Connel gave the treasurer’s report.

    Balances: Checking Account (2/12/2002) $4,059.34

    Savings Account (2/12/2002) $14,224.44

    A motion was made by George Vaclavek and seconded by Wanda Manderscheid to accept the treasurer’s report. Passed unanimously.

  9. Recent & upcoming events
    1. OKC Garden Festival 2001 – Joe Howell reported that the Garden Festival booth was a huge success. Lyle Henry showed pictures from the booth "Horticultural Homestead" and recognized the people involved.
    2. Garden Festival in the Park – Cathy Connel gave an update on the Garden Festival in the Park to be held June 8 at Will Rogers Park in OKC. OHS will have a booth at the festival. Volunteers are needed to staff the booth from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and plant donations are needed.
    3. Garden Tour for Connoisseurs – John Fluitt announced that the Garden Tour for Connoisseurs is scheduled for Saturday, June 1. He is still looking for gardens to include on the tour. Tickets for the tour are on sale now. Volunteers are needed to help with the tour.
    4. Dallas Bus Trip – Wanda Manderscheid announced that OHS will be conducting a bus tour to the Dallas Arboretum on Saturday, April 6. The bus will leave the OSU Extension Office at 930 N. Portland at 8:00 a.m. The cost is $35.00 for OHS members and $40.00 for non-members.
    5. Garden Gala at OKC Zoo – Pearl Pearson gave a report on the Zoo’s Garden Gala. The Gala for 2002 will be held on September 7. OHS will need volunteers for the booth at this event.

    1. Scholarship Recipients

Joe Howell recognized the OHS scholarship recipients for 2001-2002 school year.

  1. Election of new board members and officers
    1. Shirley McFarland, head of the nominating committee, presented the slate of board members and officers to the membership. Officers are Hugh Stout – President, Shirley McFarland – Vice-President, Brenda Sanders – Secretary, and JoAnne Vervinck – Treasurer. New board members whose term expires in 2004 are Sharon Beasley, Allan Storjohann, Wanda Manderscheid, Victoria Michalik, Pearl Pearson, Cathy Connel, and Brent Suttles. Marjorie Moesel moved that the slate be accepted by acclimation. The motion was seconded by Olen Thomas and passed unanimously. The officers and board members were sworn in by Dick Moesel. Board members whose terms expire in 2003 include Dave Edwards, Dick Moesel, Steve Owens, George Vaclavek, Russell Studebaker, Steve Sprehe, and Ann Pinc.
    2. President Hugh Stout recognized outgoing president Joe Howell and thanked him for his tenure as president of OHS. He also recognized outgoing board members Cathy Koelsch and Carla Childs for all their hard work for OHS.

  4. Lyle Henry gave a presentation on the newly designed OHS web page. Thanks Lyle for all you hard work on the web page – it really shows!

  5. George J. Vaclavek Gold Medal Award

George J. Vaclavek Gold Medal Awards were presented to:

Pearl Pearson, in appreciation for her work at the Oklahoma City Zoo & Botanical Gardens and her efforts in achieving Botanical Garden status for the zoo.

Steve Beiberich, for his willingness to share his vast knowledge of plants with others and for his dedication to the art of plant exploration and propagation.

Warren Filley, in recognition of his dedication and enthusiasm that brought about a revitalization of OHS.

XI. Adjournment

The meeting adjourned at 2:05 p.m. Pamela Harper then gave a presentation on "Time Tested Plants, From Thirty Years In A Four Season Garden."
