Minutes Minutes from the Fall General Meeting were read and approved. Treasurer’s report JoAnne Vervinck gave the treasurer’s report. Balances: Checking Account (3/8/2003) $3,377.65 Savings Account (3/7/2003) $18,928.14 JoAnne also reported that OHS had donated $18,000 towards education. Upcoming Events OHS Bus trip to Arnold’s Greenhouse Garden Tour for Connoisseurs – June 6 Festival in the Park – June 6 Zoo Garden Gala - September Myriad Gardening School V. Awards Scholarship Recipients Scholarship recipients for the 2002-2003 year are as follows: Justin Moss, OSU - $1,000 in honor of Paul Mitchell Cheryl Boyer, OSU - $1,000 in honor of Dr. Richard Payne Amanda “Brooke” Winters, OSU - $500 in honor of Hugh Hedger Jonathan Daniel, OSU - $250 in honor of Mary Ann Halliburton Edward Davis, OSU-OKC - $500 in honor of Hugh Hedger The following grants were also given out this year: Oklahoma Garden Festival Award Cooper’s Nursery was the winner of the Landscape Education award at the Oklahoma Garden Festival. This award was for $1,000.00 and was sponsored by OHS Youth Grants/Awards Marjorie Moesel submitted a report on the following grants/awards for youth sponsored by OHS this past year: Grant to the Multi Arts Center in Stillwater for their Children’s Garden & Outdoor Classroom. Helped underwrite the Oklahoma Junior Master Gardener’s Program. Helped support the junior division competition at the 2003 Oklahoma Garden Festival. Donated $500 to the Oklahoma 4-H Foundation to sponsor the county medals for the 4-H gardening & horticulture project winners for the 2002-2003 year. Supplying a $500 scholarship for the 4-H state winner in the Gardening & Horticulture project for 2002-2003 Sponsoring a $500 award for the state winner in Diversified Horticulture for the Oklahoma FFA Association. George J. Vaclavek Gold Medal Award George Vaclavek presented the Gold Medal award to Dr. Carl Whitcomb in recognition of his willingness to share his knowledge to those in the nursery business and gardeners throughout the state of Oklahoma and beyond. VI. Amendment to By-Laws A motion was made by Shirley McFarland and seconded by Wanda Manderscheid to accept the amendment to the by-laws. The amendment would be part or Section 7 - Article 3 and had been published in the Horticulture Horizons Newsletter for all membership to read. The amendment read as follows: Article III Section VII. “Should a director not attend at least 50% of duly called meetings of the Board, they shall be considered as not performing their elected duties and their office shall be considered vacated. Extenuating circumstances may be considered on the basis of written data furnished the Board or the attendance of the next meeting. The amendment passed unanimously. VII. Election of Officers Hugh Stout read the nominations for OHS board members for the 2003-2005 term. Johnny Satterlee, Shirley Kennedy, Shirley McFarland, and Wanda White. Shirley McFarland moved that we accept these nominees by acclimation. Seconded by Wanda Manderscheid. Passed unanimously. Nominations for officers for 2003: Hugh Stout – President; Warren Filley – Vice-President; JoAnne Vervinck – Treasurer; Brenda Sanders – Secretary. Wanda Manderscheid moved that these nominees be accepted by acclimation. Seconded by George Vaclavek. Passed unanimously. VIII. Old Business A. Hugh Stout announced that OHS is a new sponsor of the Oklahoma Gardening Television Show on OETA. B. Brent Suttles has agreed to serve as chair of the newly formed Heritage Tree Committee of OHS New Business An ad hoc committee has been formed to keep the OHS membership informed on the status of Will Rogers Park in Oklahoma City. Warren Filley and JoAnne Vervinck are serving as co-chairs. There will be a meeting on Wednesday, March 12 at 7:00 p.m. at the OSU John E. Kirkpatrick Horticulture Center at 400 N. Portland in Oklahoma City for all those concerned. X. Adjournment The meeting adjourned at 1:50 p.m. Dan Hinkley spoke to the group immediately following the meeting.
