I. Meeting called to order
President Joe Howell called the meeting to order at 2:35 p.m. at the Oklahoma
Botanical Garden & Arboretum in Stillwater.
II. Announcements
*The OKC Zoo Garden Gala will be held on Saturday, October 13
*The Oklahoma Urban & Community Forestry Council's Annual Conference will
be held Tuesday, October 9 in Ardmore.
*Sandy Wright, Director of the Oklahoma Garden Festival announced the dates
of the festival - January 31 - February 3, 2002 and invited OHS members to participate
in the festival. The speakers for 2002 include Neal Sperry, Ken Druse, Felder
Rushing, Greg Grant, and Chris Hanson.
*The speaker for the Winter Meeting of OHS will be Pamela Harper. She will be
speaking at the Winter Meeting on February 16 at the Oklahoma City Zoological
Park and Botanical Garden.
III. Treasurer's report
Cathy Connel gave the treasurer's report.
Balances: Checking Account (9/23/2001) $5,368.86
Savings Account (9/23/2001) $10,231.97
IV. Awards
A. Scholarship Recipients
Joe Howell introduced one of the OHS scholarship recipients from Stillwater,
Justin Moss, MS candidate in turfgrass science - recipient of the Paul Mitchell
Scholarship for 2001-2002. He also announced the other recipients: Eve Morgan
- Stillwater; Edward Davis - OSU-OKC; and Sheila Weiser - OSU-OKC.
B. George J. Vaclavek Gold Medal Award
George Vaclavek presented the Gold Medal award to John Fluitt in honor for all
he has done for OHS.
V. T-Shirts & Hats
Lyle Henry announced that OHS T-shirts & hats were for sale.
VI. Adjournment
The meeting adjourned at 3:00 p.m. The silent auction was concluded. Steve Bieberich
gave a seminar entitled "30 Years Growing Southern Great Plains Plants",
which was followed by a tour of the Oklahoma Gardening Studio Gardens given
by Steve Owens.
