OHS Scholarship Program


As a nonprofit organization interested in promoting good gardening practices and stimulating interest in horticulture the Oklahoma Horticultural Society is proud to sponsor scholastic scholarships to college students. The funds for these scholarships come from our Education Endowment Fund at the Oklahoma City Community Foundation. Donations may be made to this fund at any time by sending a check payable to Oklahoma City Community Foundation specifically for the Oklahoma Horticultural Society Fund. SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION

Two 1,000 dollar scholarships (at OSU/Stillwater) two 500 dollar scholarships (at OSU at OKC) and one 500 dollar scholarship (at Tulsa Community College) are awarded each academic year beginning at the fall semester. To be considered for a scholarship you must be a student at OSU's Department of Landscape Architecture and Horticulture.

Scholarships are awarded in honor of distinguished former professors and OHS members

Richard Payne Ph.D. Scholarship of $1000 at OSU

Paul Mitchell Ph.D. Scholarship of $1000 at OSU

Division Head and OHS member,

Hugh Hedger $500 Scholarship at OSU - Oklahoma City

and former Division Head and director of the John E. Kirkpatrick Horticultural Center and OHS member,

Mary Ann Haliburton $500 Scholarship at OSU - Oklahoma City

Russell Studebaker $500 Scholarship at Tulsa Community College - Tulsa

The following criteria must be met:

  1. Must be a Horticulture student enrolled in coursework in the areas of Landscape Architecture, Landscape Contracting, Greenhouse or Nursery Production, Turf Management, Floriculture, Horticultural Therapy or related.
  2. Must be a current resident of Oklahoma for a minimum of one year.
  3. Must have a minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 3.0.
  4. Must have completed a minimum of 30 hours of college credit coursework.
  5. Must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours each semester.
  6. Financial need will be considered in the final selection of candidates.

The scholarships will be awarded in equal payments of between $250 and $500 each semester for the scholarships.

The OHS Scholarship in Memory of Paul Mitchell and the OHS Scholarship in Honor of Dick Payne are awarded to undergraduate or graduate students pursuing majors in the Department of Horticulture & Landscape Architecture at OSU-Stillwater. Recipients of these scholarships will be selected by the OHS Executive Committee from nominees provided by the Department's Scholarship Committee.
